Director Makoto Shinkai (aka Shinkai Makoto), who is known for his previous animated feature film "The Garden of Words" (2010), returns with his newest creation, "5 Centimeters Per Second". This film is meant to be watched over and over again.It premiered in Japan on August 14, 2011. It received its North American premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2011. The film was released in Japan on September 23, 2011 and was released in the U.S., Canada and Taiwan on October 4, 2011 by GKIDS. It opened at #1 at the Japanese Box Office grossing $6,800,000 during its opening weekend. In Taiwan it earned NT$12,200,000 during its opening weekend. In the U.S. and Canada, it earned $2,676,136 during its opening weekend and was the #1 grossing Japanese film during the first weekend of October 2011. It finished at #18 in Japan's all-time box office chart with a gross of $8,857,000 as of November 1, 2011. The film debuted at #5 on "Box Office Mojo"'s list of top-grossing animated films for 2011 (tied with "Coraline"). It grossed $5,890,880 in the United States and Canada and $2,898,613 in other territories for a worldwide total of $9,789,393. The film received positive reviews from most critics. On Rotten Tomatoes it has a score of 80% based on 10 reviews, with an average rating of 7/10. Rebecca Silverman from Anime News Network gave the film an overall grade of B plus saying that there was too much romance and not enough character depth. She also commented that "the pacing is a bit slow at times". Mike Crandol gave it a more positive review giving it a grade A.
